About the program:
The Mississauga Lightning is a Special Olympics floor hockey club
that provides a great sports experience for individuals with an intellectual
disability. The Lightning have been in existence for
over 15 years and have competed at local, provincial, out of province and even
out of country events.
New for the 2011-2012 season is our House League program. Based on
enrolment the Lightning will assess players and create well balanced teams to
compete against each other on Friday nights in the house league. Exhibition,
regular season and a playoff round will result in a house league champ crowned
at the end of the year!
As in past years,
Timelines and season
structure:
The first few weeks will be focused on assessing players and in
some cases introducing new athletes to the sport. At the end of this period
balanced and well matched teams will be ‘drafted’ by the coaching staff. We
will follow this with a small exhibition season of about 2 weeks then begin
regular season games. About midway through the season we will asses the
‘fairness’ of the teams and make some trades if needed!
We will conclude the season with a playoff and championship round
which will include all of the players.
Throughout the year we will have practice sessions on non-game
nights, and participate in exhibition games against other Special Olympics
teams and special guests on an ad- hoc basis.
Tournaments:
Tournament teams will generally by open to all players, however
the goal will be to ensure we are submitting teams at appropriate competitive
levels (which means we may not be able to accommodate
all interested players all the time). Generally there will be no additional
fees for day tournaments, however overnight tournaments may require players to
subsidize some of the costs.
What you need:
Players will be required to supply their own hockey helmet (with a
full face shield/cage), gloves and shin pads. The team supplies the sticks.
Costs:
Our cost model has been to charge first time athletes $100 and
returning athletes $50. The $100 helps subsidize some our initial one time
costs such as player uniforms. The fees also allow us to host our tournament,
enter other tournaments, pay for equipment etc.
When do we start:
We will have an ‘open house’ on Friday October 14, 2011 at St.
Edith Stein. It is our recommendation that new athletes come on out and try our
program first before committing to the season. If you have fun – you can sign
up that night, or if you need to think about it, that’s ok too!
