THE MFHL – 10 YEARS OF FLOOR
HOCKEY ACTION
The Mississauga Floor Hockey League (“MFHL”) began on November 8, 2001 with the North Halton Stingers hosting the Brampton Panthers. The Panthers
won the game 14-2 and would be crowned the 2001-2002 Champions. The league
lasted ten years with the final game being played on February 24, 2011, where
the renamed Stingers (now called the Milton Mighty Ducks) played the
Mississauga Lightning. The Stingers/Ducks once again scored two goals, but the
Lightning popped in seven to win the last game of the MFHL
7-2.
The league began with 4 teams – Brampton,
Mississauga, Flamborough
and North Halton,
and would expand to five teams in 2002-2003 with the entry of one of the most
dominant MFHL teams, the Hamilton Real McCoys. Despite the Real McCoy’s early dominance, the
Mississauga Lightning would end the season with the Lindsay Cup, grabbing the
first of five MFHL Championships they would obtain
over the years. Mississauga would repeat as
Champs in 2004, after wining 2 of 3 of the Championship round against Hamilton. The 2004-2005
season saw Flamborough being replaced by the Oakville cougars and was decided by another Hamilton vs. Mississauga
final, with Hamilton
grabbing the Championship in two games. Hamilton would repeat as Champs in 2006
and grab a third title in 2007, which saw the league contract to only three teams
as Oakville and Brampton folded. The 2007-2008 league
saw a return of Oakville, but the loss of Hamilton. This
essentially ended the great Hamilton vs. Mississauga rivalry and allowed Mississauga to win the 2008, 2009 and 2010
titles over the ever improving Milton Mighty Ducks.
The MFHL is currently on
hiatus as the organizers look for a new seasonal play format.
Thanks to all the teams who participated over the last
10 years!
